'Ready for early polls'

By Marcus Dam

KOLKATA NOV. 17. The Sikkim Chief Minister, Pawan Kumar Chamling, has said that his party is prepared to go to the polls even before its term ends. "I would like the Assembly elections in the State to be held simultaneously with the Parliamentary elections next year, whenever that might be," he told The Hindu today over the telephone from Gangtok.

"Weeding out corruption will be high on the list of priorities in my party's election manifesto which we have started working on," he added.

The Central Bureau of Investigation's decision to wind up its office in the State last month surprised the Government. "We had no prior information. Our consent was not sought. But the charges of corruption against the former Chief Minister, Nar Bahadur Bhandari, following investigations by the CBI are still being heard in court. Maybe the CBI no longer feels the need for having an office in the State. It proves that corruption is on the wane here even though there is some more work to be done," he said.
