Exercise begins for selection of new CBI Director

By Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI NOV. 11. With the term of the present Central Bureau of Investigation Director, P.C. Sharma, set to end in the first week of December, an exercise has begun to select his successor.

The Selection Committee that will recommend a panel of names to the Government met here yesterday and held preliminary discussions, highly-placed Government sources said.

The meeting had to wind up early, as the Home Secretary, N. Gopalaswami, had to leave to accompany the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, to Male. It is learnt that the Selection Committee will meet again later this week.

The CBI Director is appointed in accordance with the Supreme Court guidelines laid down in the Vineet Narain judgment of December 1997.

The Selection Committee headed by the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, with the Home Secretary and Secretary (Personnel) as members, will make its recommendation to the Government. The apex court has stated that the views of the incumbent Director shall be considered by the Committee for making the best choice.

``The Committee shall draw up a panel of Indian Police Service officers on the basis of their seniority, integrity, experience in investigation and anti-corruption work. The final selection shall be made by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet from the panel recommended by the Selection Committee. If none among the panel is found suitable, the reasons thereof shall be recorded and the Committee asked to draw up a fresh panel,'' according to the Supreme Court judgement.
