Teenagers held for Melapalayam girl's murder

By Our Staff Reporter

Tirunelveli Nov. 10. The police have arrested two teenagers, including a girl, on charges of killing Mujitha Bhanu, seven-year-old girl from Melapalayam, on November 7.

Both P. Rifai alias Mohammed Rifai (17) and A. Jannath (16) hailed from Melapalayam.

According to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Gopalakrishnan, the girl was killed as she happened to witness the duo in a "compromising position" in the toilet of the madrassa, where Mujitha Bhanu learnt Arabic. "Jannath, the Arabic teacher, madly attacked her with a log and knife, while Rifai dashed her head against the wall.

The victim, lying inside the madrassa in a pool of blood, was located only at 8.30 p.m., nearly four hours after the incident, and was taken to a private nursing home and then to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital, where she died," Mr. Gopalakrishnan said.

Ms. Jannath also reportedly relieved the ear-studs of the girl and sold it in a jewellery shop at Melapalayam, where she had already reportedly sold a golden chain and a ring, stolen from two kids, brought to her recently for blessing when they fell ill.

The duo was remanded later.
