Advani `pained'

New Delhi Nov. 8. The Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, today said he is ``pained'' over the Tamil Nadu Assembly's decision to jail six senior journalists of The Hindu and Murasoli.

He, however, declined to make a detailed comment saying it was a decision of a State legislature.

At the same time, Mr. Advani told reporters here that ``such a development pains one and you feel upset''.

`Unfortunate'

The Union Minister of State for Home, I.D. Swami, talking to mediapersons at Rohtak in Haryana, termed as ``unfortunate'' the entire episode leading to police raids on the leading newspaper.

``India has an independent judiciary and a free press that is regarded as parliament perpetually in session and any curb on the freedom of the press was deplorable,'' he said. — PTI
