Cong. sees politics in Goel move

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JULY 16. The initiatives of the Chandni Chowk MP and Union Minister of State, Vijai Goel, to improve conditions of the municipal primary schools in the Capital by motivating NGOs to adopt them, today took a political overtone as Councillors of the ruling Congress accused him of portraying the civic body in a bad light.

``Whereas the improvement of the school has been done with funds of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, Mr. Goel is trying to take credit for the same just because he has spent about a lakh by donating some toys and desks to the school at Bandookwali Gali in the Walled City,'' alleged the Standing Committee Deputy Chairman, Ashok Jain, at Town Hall today.

At the same time, the Congress Councillors including the Leader of the House, Ram Babu Sharma, welcomed the decision of the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to interact with pupils of the municipal school in the Walled City which Mr. Goel claims to have adopted. "We have sent a formal letter of invitation to the President in this regard. It is a matter of pride for the entire MCD and the residents of the Walled City in particular that Mr. Kalam would be visiting the area,'' the Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, said.

However, the Congress Councillors objected that Mr. Goel had not entered into any memorandum of understanding with the MCD. "Handing over schools to the NGOs is a good initiative, but we should evolve a specific policy in this regard,'' the Chandni Chowk Councillor, Braj Mohan Sharma, said.
