Tamil Nadu
By Our Special Correspondent
The convener of the All-India State Government Employees Coordination Committee, M. N.V.G. Adiyodi, talking to newsmen here today, said the current development in Tamil Nadu was not an issue between the employees and the Government alone. It had wider ramifications. If the employees failed in their fight, then other State Governments, public and private sector enterprises would adopt the same ``draconian'' measures to ``crush'' their employees' agitations. Ultimately the democratic rights of the working class, including job security, wage structure and service conditions would be in jeopardy. Mr. Adiyodi said there had been a sustained move to close all service sectors like schools and hospitals by the State governments. This would hit the common man. He appealed to the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, to withdraw all dismissal orders and start negotiations with the associations to find an amicable solution to the issue. Meanwhile, the all-India Bank Employees Association, which condemned the State Government's use of the Essential Services Maintenance Act against its employees and teachers, joined the all-India protest day observed today. Its secretary, C. H. Venkatachalam, said all unions affiliated to the association would send telegrams to the Chief Minister condemning her action. The General Insurance Employees Association also organised demonstrations in the State condemning the Government's attitude towards its employees.
