Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Special Correspondent
The Chief Minister, A. K. Antony, told presspersons after the Cabinet meeting that the all Government, aided and unaided schools would be allowed to admit students additionally. The Chief Minister said the Government would inform the High Court that it was not for banning campus politics, but favoured restrictions and reforms in college elections. (The court had asked the Government to convey its stand in a case seeking ban on campus politics). Elections based on partisan politics needed to be checked and elections held on the basis of a parliamentary system. Mr. Antony said that the Cabinet had decided to reduce the maximum leave that could be sanctioned to Government doctors for taking up jobs elsewhere from 20 years to 10 years. This was in view of shortage of doctors in Government hospitals. He said that Scheduled Tribes in tribal areas would be given free rations until September 15. The Maratti Community, which was removed from the Scheduled Caste list, would be given all benefits during this year pending review of the removal. He said that the steps were being taken to avoid hardships to the public on account of the strike by lorry operators. Arrangements had been made to bring vegetables and other items by buses and other vehicles and ensure supply of petrol and diesel. He urged the lorry operators to withdraw the strike. The Government had expressed willingness for talks.
