Police force Alampur MLA to end fast

By Our Correspondent

MAHABUBNAGAR JULY 16. The forcible eviction of the fasting Telangana Rashtra Samiti leader and Alampur MLA, R. Ravindranath Reddy, from his hunger strike camp near the Collectorate led to a tense situation in the district headquarters on Wednesday.

Dr. Reddy, who has been on an indefinite fast since Friday last, was shifted to the Government Hospital amid tight security.

He was demanding closure of the construction sluices of RDS anicut to ensure supply of 15.9 tmcft of Tungabadhra water to the district.

The RDS issue, which led to a sharp division among ruling party legislators hailing from Kurnool and Mahabubnagar district, has been snowballing into a major controversy.

With the TRS leader being forcibly evicted, the APCC joint secretary, D.K. Aruna, began a fast-unto-death agitation at the same site.

A strong posse of police which descended on the hunger strikers in the wee hours initially requested the MLA to withdraw his fast as his condition was deteriorating. As Dr. Reddy refused, they forcibly put him into a waiting police van.

The TRS activists led by the party district president, A. Laxma Reddy, put up stiff resistance. However, police pushed them aside.Mr. Laxma Reddy and another TRS leader, Bekkari Srinivas Reddy, sustained minor injuries in the melee that ensued. Police also arrested scores of TRS activists who squatted in front of the police vehicles and raised slogans.

As the news of the forcible shifting of the MLA spread, there was some tension in Mahabubnagar and Kothakota towns.

Reports said TRS activists made a vain bid to set fire to an RTC bus near Kothakota. Incidents of vehicles being stopped on the National Highway dislocating traffic were also reported from different places.

Ms. Aruna, who undertook the fast, declared that she would continue her agitation till the Government ordered the release of 15.9 tmcft of Tungabhadra water to ayacutdars of RDS and closure of all the construction sluices on the anicut.

The Government should also withdraw its decision of diverting the Jurala project water to the RDS ayacut which was against the verdict of the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal, she told reporters.

The chairman of the Telangana Congress Forum, G. Chinna Reddy, told reporters separately that the hunger strikes would continue even if the Government forcibly shifted Ms. Aruna to hospital.

"Our agitation will continue till the Government concedes our demands,'' he asserted.
