Mr. Chandre Gowda was replying to the issue of the death of the boy allegedly after partaking of food served under the "Akshara Dasoha" programme at Kadur, raised by K.M. Krishnamurthy (JD-S). The minister appealed to the Opposition and the people against condemning a welfare measure such as Akshara Dasoha merely because some children had taken ill. Mr. Krishnamurthy demanded that the Government publicise the report of the post-mortem examination. He claimed that the Deputy Commissioner of Chikmagalur District was, at one time, unwilling to subject the body of the child to autopsy. Mr. Chandre Gowda said that being the District in-charge Minister, he had visited the town. So also the Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, B.K. Chandrashekar. Though the mother of the boy claimed that he had visited the school on July 1 and 2, the school authorities had maintained that he was absent. The boy had not eaten the food served under the midday meal scheme, whereas his elder brother, who did so, was in good health. Mr. Krishnamurthy was aware of the facts but was talking differently in the House. There was a tendency among the people to jump to conclusions and blame the death of children on the Akshara Dasoha, and suicide committed by farmers to the problems of the farm sector.
