According to the Kagaznagar Circle Inspector, T.Sadanand Singh, in May this year, the branch manager of Southern Road Carriers, Amarender Singh, complained to the police that a truck bearing the number, AP 26 T 7403, which was hired to transport paper reams from Sirpur Paper Mill to Hubli in Karnataka, went missing. The truckload of paper ream, valued at Rs. 3.49 lakhs, was booked on March 11, 2003 and the driver was identified as K.M. Mani. The manager of the road carriers, who waited for over two months trying to trace the vehicle, lodged a complaint with the Kagaznagar police. The police registered a case and took up investigation. During investigation, it became clear that the missing truck was registered in Nellore district. The number also turned out to be fictitious raising further confusion. However, on July 9, the Sarpavaram police station in Kakinada rural circle of East Godavari district, passed on information to the Adilabad police that six persons were arrested in connection with a theft case. The accused allegedly confessed to have committed the theft of the lorry and selling away the consignment. The Kagaznagar CI rushed to Sarpavaram and obtained police custody of the six and brought them to Kagaznagar. The accused, identified as Vemuri Papaiah, Modur Shanmugam Mudaliar, Mallepati Rajasekhar, Gunamadugu Suresh and Kanakampati Bhaskar Naidu, all residents of Chittoor district and Roopesh Kumar of Anantapur district, confessed to have committed the offence. They revealed that the stolen consignment was disposed of to some traders in Kenepudi village of Pichatur mandal of Chittoor district where some untold paper reams were also stored. The police on their confession raided the places and recovered the reams worth Rs. 2.30 lakhs. The gang members, during sustained interrogation, also confessed to their involvement in other cases in Tamil Nadu and Maharastra. The six reportedly waylaid and hijacked a lorry carrying coriander seed and disposed of the stock in Nagpur. In another incident, the same gang decamped with a lorry carrying rice in Miryalguda. In the third incident, they hijacked a lorry laden with textile material and stole it. The Kagaznagar police remanded the six accused to judicial custody.
