New police circle proposed in Kurnool district

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL July 16. A new circle has been proposed at Kolimigundla for effective policing in the mining belt of the district. Recurring violence in the area in the past three months prompted the police to make the proposal. The new circle will be placed under the officer of the rank of an Inspector. At present six police stations are covered by the Koilkuntla circle. At times, the inspector had to travel to a distance of 140 km to reach the trouble spot.

The stations at Kolimigundla, Uyyalawada, Sanjamala, Koilkuntla, Revanur and Dornipadu are administered by the Koilkuntla circle. The new circle will have its headquarters at Kolimigundla, the hot bed of factionism in the area.

Violence got renewed in the area with the murder of two persons at Reddipalli in May. The two were lynched in retaliation to a murder last year. On June 23, the sarpanch of Ankireddypalli, S. Veerapu Reddy, who was coming on a motorcycle, was bumped and then stabbed to death. The group of Rammohan Reddy of the village was believed to have masterminded the murder.

A few days ago, the key follower of the MP, Y. Venkat Reddy, was attacked while he was returning in a Tata Sumo from a temple. The group of Fakir Reddy was allegedly behind the attack. The incidents at regular intervals brought pressure on the police which had been struggling to contain faction violence.

In the Kolimigundla belt, the rivalry is between the groups supported by the MP, Bhuma Nagireddy, and the former MLA, Karra Subba Reddy. In fact, both belonged to the ruling party. The Congress MLA, Challa Ramakrishna Reddy, was found to be in good terms with the Bhuma group.

The Police Department proposed to post the faction zone inspector at Kolimigundla to avoid delay in creating a new post. The Government might take considerable time to create a new post since financial burden was involved. The post of faction zone with the headquarters at Kurnool appeared to have not yielded the desired results and of late, the vacancy was used to temporarily post the controversial officers. The senior officers too preferred abolition of the post and creation of a new circle at Kolimigundla.
