The women did even better ending the opening day at fourth with a total of 1952 after the single FITA round competitions over two distances were gone through. The men shot the arrows over 90m and 70m distances, while the women had targets set at 70 and 60m. Korea held top positions in both categories. The Korean men totalled 1985 followed by Australia and Italy with 1916. The Korean women logged 2021 followed by defending champion China with 1961 and Great Britain with 1960. Satyadev Prasad was the toast of the men's team. He collected 641 over two distances. He was followed by debutant Tarundeep Rai with 627, Acharya Ved Kumar with 625 and veteran Limba Ram was fourth with a poor 595. Best three individual scores would be considered for team total. At the end of the day, Prasad was 13th overall; Rai was 41st, Kumar 47th and Limba Ram 102nd. In the ladies section, Reena Kumari shot 655 to be seventh overall. Dola Banerjee scored 651 and finished 12th, Chekrovolu Swuro tallied 646 to end 20th while Bheigyabati Chanu got 635 to stand 43rd overall. The Indian camp was palpably very happy with such a good showing. Speaking to The Hindu from New York, Mr. Paresh Nath Mukherjee, senior vice-president of the Archery Association of India, who has gone there to attend the FITA congress, said, "the Indians were fantastic on the first day and we hope they will keep up their good work in the days to come.'' World's top ranked Ilario di Buo of Italy managed to score only 628 to end 39th overall just ahead of Rai. His teammate and No. 2 ranked Michele Frangilli scored 642 to finish 11th, two spots ahead of India's Prasad. Korea's Young-Ho Jang was first with 673, teammate Young-Kwang Choi was second with 659 and Kyung-Mo Park was third with 653 in the men's group. In the ladies section, Sung-Hyun Park held top place with 688 followed by compatriot Mi-Jin Yun with 677. Italy's Natalia Valeeva was third with 667. Interestingly, Natalia won the 1995 World title representing Moldova. The scores (Indians only): Men (Read as: total, 90m & 70m): Satyadev Prasad 641 (308, 333), Tarundeep Rai 627 (304, 323), Acharya Ved Kumar 625 (295, 330), Limba Ram 595 (277, 318).
