'Zoo violating rules'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM JULY 16. Of the 34 species of animals in captivity in the Thiruvananthapuram zoo, nine have been without mates for a long time now.

In reply to a question raised by K. Mohankumar, the Minister for Water Resources and Zoos, T.M. Jacob, said in the Assembly today that that as per the existing rules, animals could not be kept in captivity in zoos without mates for more than a year.

The animals include rhinoceros, zebra, Capuchin monkey, African bison, wild goat, jackal, leopard, hyena and elephant.
