Fresh NBW against Chennai lawyer

NEW DELHI JULY 16. A Delhi court has issued a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against a Chennai-based lawyer for making false statements in a petition regarding the determination of the age of the former Chief Justice, A.S. Anand, before the Supreme Court.

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, K.S. Pal, issued a fresh NBW against the then Madras High Court Advocates Association president, R. Karuppan, after the prosecution sought more time to execute the warrant issued by the court on October 19 last year.

Mr. Pal ordered execution of the NBW against Mr. Karuppan through the Delhi Commissioner of Police (North).

The Supreme Court had directed institution of a complaint before a magistrate of competent jurisdiction against Mr. Karuppan after it was found that in his complaint he had made certain averments on oath, which he allegedly knew to be false.

Noting that he had made false statements in his complaint regarding the determination of the age of Justice Anand, the apex court had said: ``With the object of eradicating the evil of perjury, we empower the Registrar-General of this court to file a complaint under Section 193 IPC against him.''
