Addressing a press conference here today, Manjo Kohli, President, Mobility Leaders Ltd., Bharti Tevelventures, hoped that the tariff unification would increase the subscriber base. The President said as per the new tariff structure, for calls made by customers while roaming in Tamil Nadu and Chennai, the rates had been reduced from the earlier Rs. 3 per minute. Though the 15 per cent mark up on the roaming rate would not be charged, the PSTN (public switched telephone network) component would continue to be charged as applicable while roaming. In addition to this, all incoming calls would be free even while roaming between Tamil Nadu and Chennai. P. Swaminathan, CEO South Hub, Bharti Cellular, said the unified STD and roaming rate would significantly benefit its customers. This exclusive service would come into effect from July 21. The company was planning to offer cost effective handsets to its customers for Rs. 2,900. It would soon offer these handsets on instalment basis to its subscribers. The CEO said AirTel would not have any lock-in period for customers who bought AirTel handsets.
