Jamaica beats U.S.

KINGSTON (Jamaica) JULY 16. Australia, Jamaica and New Zealand remained the only unbeaten teams competing for the World Netball Championship Trophy as they continue their march toward an inevitable clash.

New Zealand took care of the toughest opponent on Tuesday with a 60-41 victory over world No. 3 England.

Also Jamaica won 85-20 against the United States, while Australia defeated South Africa 64-37.

Australia and Jamaica meet on Wednesday, with the loser likely to meet an impressive New Zealand outfit in Friday's semifinals.

England is still expected to salvage a semifinal place from Group B, and hope to meet the Kiwis in the final to avenge Tuesday's defeat.

The Aussies were comfortable winners despite their shooter shot at 79 per cent as against 90 per cent for the South Africans, who suffered several turnovers. South Africa lost the ball 51 times in 60 minutes as against 37 for Australia. Sindisiwe Gumede had another outstanding game for the South Africans with a game-high 46 goals, shooting at 90 per cent.

In the most important game England, after staying close to New Zealand, for the fist two quarters finished poorly.

England's work was not supported in offence and main goal shoot Alex Astle had a disappointing match in which she shot at 65 per cent, when only the higher 80s would have been adequate. Her 15 goals came from 23 attempts.

Abby Teare, even though she played goal attack, outperformed and outscored Astle. She had 26 goals.

At the other end, New Zealand's Irene Van Dyke maintained her high standards, in spite taking many knocks in the game shooting at over 90 per cent. Her game-high 46 points from 51 attempts effectively sealed England's fate.
