Sir, If, as you have stated in your Editorial, political compulsions at home rather than realpolitik guided the decision, then there is no doubt that it is a bad one. As a matter of fact, we could have utilised the opportunity well. For example, we could have contended with the U.S. in the lines that, "if a sizeable manpower has to be sent to Iraq, it will create a dent in domestic troop availability and, as a result, terrorist infiltration will wax. So, if India is allowed to attack the terrorist infrastructure across the Line of Control (without any fuss from the U.S. and Britain), it will check infiltration to a great extent and India can spare some troops to Iraq". If India had made such demands and got a negative reply, then the decision is right.
