For the time being, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, B.C. Khanduri, has been assigned additional charge of this Ministry. Mr. Kumar's continuation in the Union Cabinet became untenable since his appointment, a few weeks ago, as president of the BJP's Karnataka unit. Mr. Kumar as well as many of his patrons were keen that he should continue doing two jobs, but the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, is believed to have asked Mr. Kumar to put in his papers. There is, however, no indication that Mr. Vajpayee is keen on another reshuffle on the eve of the monsoon session.
