Inaugurating the MV Diabetes Clinic at Adyar, the Minister said, establishment of diabetes clinics was a "long felt need of the residents of South Chennai". The managing director of the clinic, A.Ramachandran said, a research study taken up by the centre revealed that nearly 15 per cent of the population in Chennai suffered from diabetes and the incidence is more in suburban areas. Taking into account the high prevalence of diabetes in South Chennai, it was decided by the management of the MV Hospital for Diabetes to open a clinic equipped with modern facilities to not only treat patients but also educate them in managing their condition themselves, he said. Besides research on diabetes, the hospital at Royapuram has also been designated as the WHO collaborative centre for education and training in diabetes, he added. The clinic located at Gandhi Nagar, Adyar is a computerised centre and equipped with various departments such as foot care laboratory, eye department for advanced treatment for diabetic eye disease and a department for diabetes education and counselling, Dr. Ramachandran added. The joint managing director of the clinic, Vijay Viswanathan also participated on the occasion.
