5 selected for sports training

Chennai July 10. The Tamil Nadu Government has selected five sportspersons under a scheme for shaping them into international champions.

At the Secretariat here, the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, handed over "selection orders" to Sandeep Srikanth (laser class in sailing), Joshana Chinnappa (squash), M.Dharini (shooting), S. Saraswathi (javelin throw) and S.L. Joshua Joseph (swimming). The Government would also provide a new Rs. 1-lakh pistol to Dharini; sailing equipment worth Rs. 80,000 to Sandeep; Rs. 30,000 worth sports gear and nutritious food to Saraswathi and bear the expenses on a three-week training to Joshana in squash in America; and training for Joshua in Bangalore. Besides, the Government would arrange for expert psychological counselling.
