Centre opposes summoning of PM

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI JULY 10. The Centre today opposed an application seeking the summoning of the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, for examining him as a witness before the Liberhan Commission probing the sequence of events leading to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya.

The Centre's counsel, Lala Ram Gupta, told the Commission that the "Centre does not wish or require to examine any witness or recall any witnesses" for examination.

Recently, the former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Kalyan Singh, alleged that Mr. Vajpayee, the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K. Advani, the Human Resource Minister, Murli Manohar Joshi, and the BJP spokesperson, Pramod Mahajan, were involved in a conspiracy to demolish the disputed structure.

In response to this, Mohammad Aslam Bhure, on whose petitions the Supreme Court had stopped all activities in the `disputed' and `undisputed' land in Ayodhya, filed an application before the Commission seeking to summon Mr. Vajpayee, as his examination was crucial for the Commission to reach a fair conclusion.

Opposing the application, Mr. Gupta argued that since the recording of evidence had been closed and the Government had concluded its final argument, it did not wish to examine any new witness. He urged the Commission not to accept the application.

However, he said, if it was accepted, he would put forth arguments to refute the demand for summoning the Prime Minister.

On Mr. Bhure's demand to recall Mr. Advani and Dr. Joshi, their counsel, Satya Pal Jain, submitted that the two leaders had already completed their deposition and there was no need to recall them.

He sought time to file a detailed reply.

Appearing for Mr. Kalyan Singh, counsel B.B. Saxena said he would oppose the applications filed by Mr. Bhure and the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board seeking to summon Mr. Singh.
