Official sources said Mr. Win Aung was carrying a message from Senior General, Than Shwe, on the prevailing situation in Myanmar. He also had a meeting with the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, today. The sources said Mr. Win Aung's visit was taking place in the context of the detention of the National League for Democracy (NLD) general secretary, Aung San Suu Kyi. India is among those nations that have called for the release of Ms. Suu Kyi. The United Nations special envoy on Myanmar, Razali Ismail, has publicly called on India and other neighbouring countries of Myanmar to put pressure on the military junta to release Ms. Suu Kyi.
