Upsets mark fourth day

BANGKOK July 10. Several favoured competitors were upset by underdogs on Wednesday on the fourth day of the 12th World amateur boxing championships at Bangkok's Nimibutr Gymnasium.

In the light flyweight category, China's Zhou Shiming defeated defending champion Yan Barthelmy Varela of Cuba 22-15, while Thai light welterweight Manus Boonjamnong scored a shock 21-11 victory over Nurzhan Karimzhanov of Kazakhstan, also defending his crown.

In addition to Yan Barthelmy Varela, another member of Cuba's favoured squad took a drubbing Wednesday, when Kazakhstan's Galib Jafarov outpointed Yudenis Gonzalez 27-14 in the featherweight category.
