At a press conference here, the student leaders said the decision was taken to protest against the UDF Government's "policy of using the police to stifle the democratic agitation by students against the rampant commericalisation of the education sector". The student leaders pointed out that more than 1,000 Government schools had been closed while the Government gave sanction to start 700 new ones in the private sector. They alleged that the school fee from the first standard was being hiked in the name of computer education. The Government had entered into a tie-up with a private television channel to facilitate computer education in schools. New Plus
