Letters to the Editor
Sir, The suggestion by the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, to create a South Asian trades union should be welcomed by all well-wishers of the people of the subcontinent. Such a step is the only way to get some relief to more than half of the poverty stricken population of South Asia and to divert the attention of the masses towards real issues of social and economic growth. At this time all of the countries of the region are missing great opportunities which come through free and open borders and trade. Both India and Pakistan have wasted resources to the tune of $ 30 trillion over a period of 55 years. If political wisdom had prevailed and religious fervour had been directed towards constructive ends in both the countries, income on the subcontinent would have been over $15,000 per person. Let us not waste any more time. Hameed Naz, Maryland, U.S.
