dated July 11, 1953: Economy in Buses

The Government of Madras decided to replace cushioned seats in buses with wooden benches, and save Rs. 1,000 per vehicle. The Chief Minister, and Mr. Krishna Rao, Transport Minister, had travelled in such a modified bus from the Secretariat to Mount Road and back and found the benches comfortable. With roads cemented or macadamized, passengers would not find their rides uncomfortable, Government said.
