ASI gets five more weeks

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW JULY 3. The Allahabad High Court today granted five more weeks to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to complete excavations at the disputed site in Ayodhya and directed that the final report be submitted by August 22.

The court, however, said that holidays and other days when the excavation work had to be suspended owing to rain would be excluded from the time granted to the agency. The Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department has been asked to give a certification about the days when the excavation work would remain suspended.

The ASI on Tuesday requested the court to give it three more months between October and December next to complete the excavations and submit its report. The Central Sunni Waqf Board counsel opposed this, saying that the ASI was delaying the excavation work on the dictates of its political masters.

The Court asked the Director-General of the ASI to depute four more superintending archaeologists to speed up the excavations. The Commissioner of Faizabad, authorised person in this case, has been directed to ensure proper arrangements to prevent flooding of the trenches during rain, increase the height of tents and arrange for halogen bulbs and sufficient air inside. The ASI would now submit only its final report and the views expressed in its progress reports would not be considered in the final report, the court said.
