Kerala
By K. Venkiteswaran
In an chat with pressperons at Paravur at the conclusion of a two-day State leadership camp of the Yogam, its president, C.K. Vidyasagar, and the general secretary, Vellappally Natesan, said the forum would be a political front where "likeminded people'' could flock in and it would be a forum for those who are at present not members of either political fronts in the State. However, the Kerala Janakeeya Vedi would not become a political party immediately and there was no question of it aligning with the UDF, LDF or the BJP. However, the forum would launch programmes which would ultimately result in the realisation of the dreams of the Dalits and other backward communities and ensure social justice to the oppressed sections of society. In answer to a query, he said there was no specific election-oriented work by the forum but it would be a decisive force in all the elections. The forum through various SNDP Sakha Yogams would take into account the number of political votes that the front could garner at the ward, Assembly and Parliament seats in the State. The membership based on caste and class would be calculated and necessary forms were being distributed throughout the State to estimate the probable strength that the forum could amass in the near future. The State leadership camp which began at Paravur last evening was looked upon with eagerness by political observers as there were speculation that Mr. Natesan would launch a political party. Observers had noted an increasing softening of the stand of the Yogam towards the BJP and other main Hindutva outfits of late and a distancing from the Marxists, who are the natural allies of the backward Ezhavas and who formed the backbone of the CPI(M).
