Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad

The board has also stated that only MS pipes are suitable for meeting the particular maximum operating heads and surge pressures that would develop in the project. In response to a report published in these columns about the suggestion of the Forum for Utilisation of Godavari Water that the project cost could be cut substantially by way of using a combination of MS pipes and pre-stressed concrete pipes, the board said that the combination of different pipe materials was not suitable for this project. The PSC pipes were not suitable for the size and pressure required for different pumping as well as gravity zones of the project. The joints of the PSC pipelines would be subject to leaks and prone to bursts, causing dislocation of water supplies during the maintenance phase. Whereas, in the case of MS pipes, such chances were remote and their life was more. Besides, there was no maintenance cost. "Therefore, any saving in cost due to adopting PSC pipes for a portion of the project pipeline does not arise,'' the board said. The release said that the MS pipelines being laid for the Krishna Drinking Water Supply Project were designed for transmitting 90 mgd of water, 45 mgd in stage-I phase-1. The stage-2 of phase-I, to add another 45 mgd, was programmed to be taken up and completed by end of 2005. To meet the water supply requirement up to 2021, phase -II and phase III of the project, each to bring additional 90 mgd of water to the twin cities, would be taken up at an appropriate time. After implementation of phase-II and phase-III, water from the Godavari would be brought to twin cities, it stated.
