President asks youth to join peace efforts

By Luv Puri

Jammu June 27. The President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, has said that the youth of Jammu and Kashmir have an enduring responsibility to restore peace and harmony in the country. Religious extremism and cross-border terrorism can be tackled by youth if they are determined and remain united to make the country prosperous.Speaking to The Hindu he said, "It feels great to meet the youth of the State, to understand the pain and their aspirations." Asked how he felt about being in the State, he said: "Fantastic. It is a beautiful place on earth and also its children. I enjoy every moment of my stay."

On peace with Pakistan, he asked the youth to come up with creative ideas for achieving tranquillity and for that exchange of youth between the two countries was needed.

Children were the best ambassadors of peace and they should be sent everywhere to spread the message. "I am particularly touched by the aspirations of the children of the State. I met two boys and they asked me tips for becoming scientists. It seems the children want to be instrumental in the development of the nation."
