BANGKOK: Six people were killed and 10 wounded when a passenger bus was ambushed in northern Laos, the third such attack this year, a U.S. diplomat in the Lao capital said on Friday. It was not known who carried out the June 7 attack, which occurred in the western part of the Xaysamboune Special Zone, north of Vientiane, he said on condition of anonymity. But the embassy suspected insurgents, who are active in the area. The only insurgents known to be operating in the area are members of the Hmong ethnic minority, who have been carrying on a low-profile rebellion since Laos became communist in 1975. The Hmong believe they are persecuted by the Government because they fought for a pro-American regime against the communists during the Vietnam War. They have not claimed responsibility for any of the attacks, however. . AP
