Explaining them, the General Manager, V.Anand, said the Chennai Egmore - Erode Express via Tiruchi and Karur and the Chennai Central - Bangalore (weekend) Express would become operational by July 1 and 4 respectively, while dates of introduction of the other four services would be notified later. Mr. Anand said the Chennai Egmore - Erode Express via Tiruchi and Karur would meet the long-pending demand of Pugalur, Karur, and Kulithalai passengers, who did not have a direct service to Chennai now. The Southern Railway was considering extending the service to Coimbatore after completing the doubling work between Irgur and Coimbatore. Though it was a circuitous route, the administration wanted to provide an additional service to Coimbatore, as the Chennai Central - Coimbatore section was oversaturated. To meet the passenger demand, the number of coaches in the Chennai - Mettupalayam Niligiri Express would be increased from 19 to 24 from next month. As the railways decided to interlink all State capitals, new services between Chennai and Vasco-da-gama, (Goa) and to Dehradun( Uttaranchal) /Chandigarh (Punjab/Haryana) were included in the current financial year. For the convenience of commuters of Salem and Dharmapuri, a fast passenger was being introduced between Salem and Yeshwantpur (Bangalore). The date of introduction of the services would be notified later. Mr.Anand said the Chennai Central - Bangalore Mail, the Nilgiri Express, and Nellai Express and the Tirukkural Express between Kanyakumari and New Delhi would be converted into superfast expresses from July 1 with reduction in their running timings from 35 to 90 minutes. Similarly the Chennai-Mangalore Mails, the Chennai-Alleppey Expresses, the Chennai - Erode Yercaud Expresses and the Tiruchi - Mangalore Expresses would be speeded up by 10-15 minutes. Earlier, the Minister of State for Railways, A.K.Moorthi, released the new timetable.
