The State Government, which is part-financing the Rs. 198-crore project, recently wrote to the Southern Railway asking it to take up the Salem-Vriddhachalam (139 km) conversion with the Vriddhachalam-Vadalur - Cuddalore work (58km) as it wanted to shift movement of coal for the Mettur thermal plant from Chennai to Cuddalore Port. Talking to newsmen here today, the General Manager, V. Anand, said at present the conversion between Vriddhachalam and Vadalur was completed and the work was progressing on the Vadalur - Cuddalore stretch. It would be completed by this financial year-end. The Southern Railway would take up preliminary works, including construction of minor bridges between Vriddhachalam and Salem. The traffic on the section, he said, would be closed next year for taking up major works. Similarly traffic on one of the existing metre gauge lines between Tambaram and Chengalpattu would be suspended from July 3 to facilitate gauge conversion. Though the closure, Mr. Anand said would cause hardships to commuters now it would improve main line and EMU services after the conversion when there would be two BG lines. As per the present schedule, the target date for completion was October.
