The wreckage of the former minister, S.R. Kashappanavar's estate car, which fell into a ditch in Bellary District in the early hours of Friday.
Mr. Kashappanavar, who was travelling in his Scorpio, was on his way to Bangalore from Ilkal in Bijapur District. The accident occurred around 3.30 a.m. when the driver, Syed Pasha, lost control over the estate car while trying to overtake another vehicle. The car fell into a ditch and overturned before coming to a halt. Mr. Kashappanavar, who was sleeping in the rear seat, suffered severe head injuries and died on the spot. The driver escaped with minor injuries. The badly damaged vehicle was seen about 160 ft. from the road. The windowpanes, broken pieces of the windscreen, and other parts of the vehicle, were strewn around. On receiving information about the accident, police from Kudligi, Hosahalli, and Kottur police stations rushed to the spot and brought Mr. Kashappanavar's body and the injured driver to the Government Hospital at Kudligi. The driver informed visiting presspersons at the hospital that the vehicle that he was trying to overtake hit the Scorpio, and he lost control of it. But police dismissed his statement, and said preliminary inquiries had revealed that he was speeding, and might have lost control of the vehicle. Mr. Kashappanavar frequently visited Huvina Hadagali and neighbouring taluks in Bellary District as part of his efforts to organise the Panchamasali community. A large number of people, including the former minister's relatives and supporters, from Hungund and Ilkal started arriving after getting information about the death of Mr. Kashappanavar. His sister and brother were the first to arrive from Ilkal. His wife and two sons, along with few other relatives, reached the spot around 10 a.m. After post-mortem, Mr. Kashappanavar's body was taken to his native village in Hungund taluk.
Funeral at Havaragi
The body of Mr. Kashappanavar will be laid to rest at his native village of Havaragi in Hungund taluk of Bagalkot District on Saturday at 11 a.m. Earlier on that day, it will be taken in a procession in Ilkal and Hungund towns. Hundreds of the former minister's supporters gathered at Ilkal when the body was brought there.
