Letters to the Editor
Sir, I read with interest and consternation the article, `The Indian manufacture jinx' ( June 23 ) by N. Vittal, ex-bureaucrat. He has thoughtfully enunciated the paramount need for an efficient manufacturing base. By registering a 40 per cent growth in service and 22 per cent in manufacturing, we cannot be bracketed in the developed country bandwagon. When South Asian nations such as Japan and Singapore have achieved phenomenally on the manufacturing sector, why not India? We have made a significant contribution to the IT sector and are branded as a source of low-cost labour. Our software professionals are being waged 30 per cent cheaper than their brethren in the U.S. Mr. Vittal had taken the earnest mission with the Government for raising the levels of salary of those who have software tech parks.
R.K.Sridharan,
