BANGALORE JUNE 19. Outer ring roads formed on the periphery of the City have almost become parts of it, especially in South Bangalore, because of the boom in real estate activities, which have lead to a number of layouts coming up adjacent to the ring roads.

Unlike the new ring roads developed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) in the western, northern and eastern Bangalore areas, the Outer Ring Road in southern Bangalore lacks service roads, though it has pavements.

This Outer Ring Road has come under the jurisdiction of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP).

The Mahanagara Palike has thought it fit to use the stone slabs removed from pedestrian paths from central parts of the City for the pedestrian paths adjoining the Outer Ring Road in southern Bangalore. Pavements in central parts of the City are laid with concrete blocks to help pedestrians have a smooth walking experience.

And the stone slabs have been shifted to south Bangalore and have been dumped on the pavements adjoining the Outer Ring Road. However, they are posing a danger to pedestrians as they have been dumped in such a manner that there is little space to pedestrians to walk on. Pedestrians are forced to walk on the road itself risking their lives. Areas through which the road runs house a number of schools and students are also compelled to walk on the road. People taking a morning stroll are affected as vehicles move at high speed on the road.

On the other hand, this move by the Mahanagara Palike has affected smooth movement of traffic too. Motorists have to drive with utmost caution on the road.

When contacted, the Mahanagara Palike authorities told The Hindu that the task of laying stone slabs had been entrusted to the Karnataka Land Army. They said work had begun and that it would be completed soon.
