According to police, a couple residing in Dayanandanagar in Sriramapuram Police limits fixed the "marriage" of their daughter with her maternal uncle, who runs a medical diagnostics laboratory. The "marriage" function was scheduled to take place at 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday at the girl's house. One of the girl's neighbours telephoned the Makkala Sahaya Vani and told the staff that a 14-year-old girl was being given in "marriage" to a 27-year-old man and that they should stop it. The staff of the Makkala Sahaya Vani and police went to the girl's house and stopped the proposed "marriage." The girl's parents and the groom, however, said that they were only having a betrothal function. Subsequently, police took an undertaking from the girl's parents that they would not marry her off till she reached the age of 18. Police are also verifying school records to ascertain the girl's age.
