Gift of her life after four years of agony

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD June 19. Medwin Hospitals has joined a select group of hospitals in the country by performing a cadaver organ kidney transplantation.

A fortnight ago, kidney of a 30-year-old brain-dead electrician was transplanted on a 48-year-old housewife suffering from kidney failure. For Anantamma, it was the gift of her life after four years of agony and pain.

The technical aspects apart, the transplant was made possible due to persistent counselling by members of Multi-Organ Harvesting Aid Network (MOHAN) Foundation. Foundation members spent over 10 hours in May last week, counselling members of the electrician's family that his organs could save others' lives.

The electrician was working in Warangal and suffered severe head injury when he fell from an electrical pole. Once the family agreed to donate the organs, they were retrieved at Warangal, cooled and transported here. A team of doctors, comprising consultant Nephrologist Ratan Jha and urologists -- Sanjay Sinha and Mohanraj, performed the surgery on May 30.

At a press conference here, Dr. Sinha, Dr. Mohanraj, Dr. Jha and Lalitha Raghuram, trustee and honorary executive director, Mohan Foundation, explained the entire process of transplantation.
