Anomalies in recruitment of AIIMS doctors alleged

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI JUNE 19. Alleging grave anomalies in recruitment of doctors at the prestigious All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the All-India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations' head, Udit Raj, today charged the Union Health Minister, Sushma Swaraj, with bypassing the reservation policy by favouring upper caste candidates over Dalits.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Raj said that between 1993 and 2000, over 100 doctors were recruited by the AIIMS administration on an ad hoc basis wherein besides not implementing the reservation policy, it also ignored court directives.

``But now in the recently completed recruitment drive, the AIIMS administration has given permanent appointments to all the ad hoc doctors where it has also considered their earlier period of job. This has adversely hit the career prospects of the reserved category doctors, particularly Dalits, as their seniority has been affected. Moreover, reserved category candidates have not been considered as general candidates in cases where they have competed with them in open category,'' Mr. Raj alleged.

Alleging that both Ms. Swaraj and the AIIMS Director, P.K. Dave, were not only implementing the Sangh Parivar's agenda in the Institute but also pursuing anti-Dalit policies, Mr. Raj said soon they would be mobilising member of the Dalit community to launch a crusade against the AIIMS administration.

"In the name of autonomy, Ms. Swaraj and Dr. Dave were busy implementing their own agenda. They are not only flouting court orders but also violating Constitutional norms.''

The Confederation leader also lambasted the Sangh Parivar for its latest posture on the Ayodhya case.

"When it is becoming evident that there was no temple at the disputed site in Ayodhya, they are now making it a issue of faith saying that Hindus will never withdraw their claim on the disputed land,'' he said.
