The AIADMK won a majority of the wards in both the town panchayats. At Bhavanisagar, the party won eight of the 15 seats while at Coutrallam, it won five, while the DMK won six and one respectively. As much as 86.4 per cent of the voters turned up at Coutrallam, while at Bhavanisagar, the polling percentage was 84, according to the State Election Commission. At Courtallam, the AIADMK candidate, K.P. Kumar Pandian, won the chairman post, defeating the nearest DMK candidate, Ramaiah, by a 320-vote margin. Of the 1,460 votes polled, Mr. Pandian got 833 votes (57.05 per cent) and Mr. Ramaiah, 513 votes. The Congress candidate, Lakshmi, polled 60 votes. Fiftyfour votes were declared invalid. As the AIADMK has won an absolute majority, the post of vice-chairman will also go in its favour. The candidate for this post is expected to be announced by the high command in a day or two, party sources said. The AIADMK candidates, Nageswari (ward 1), Subramania Bose (ward 2), Kumarasamy (ward 3), Kottaisamy (ward 4) and Jaya (ward 5), were elected with comfortable margin. However, the AIADMK candidate for ward 7, Ganesan, lost to the DMK candidate, Manthiram, by one vote. The sixth and eighth wards have gone in favour of independents, who contested the election with the backing of the DMK. But the AIADMK is hopeful of securing the support of the independents. The AIADMK had lost the previous election to the TMC candidate, late Kandasamy Pandian, by only 2 votes and the present thumping win has infused fresh blood in the rank and file.
