Let Maran's family pay the medical bill, DMK chief writes to PM

CHENNAI June 19. The DMK president, M. Karunanidhi, has written to the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, requesting him to permit the Union Minister, Murasoli Maran's family, to pay for the treatment of the ailing Minister. Mr. Maran has been in hospital since September 25 last year. He was admitted to the Apollo Hospitals here following high fever that day and was shifted to a Houston hospital on November 15. Thanking the Prime Minister for his ``initiatives, personal involvement and timely efforts in providing medical treatment to Mr. Maran", Mr. Karunanidhi said that ``Kalanithi Maran, son of Mr. Maran, had informed me that he would like to bear the total medical expenditure incurred for his father's treatment in the United States.''

Pointing to the fact that it was Mr. Kalanidhi Maran who paid for the Minister's treatment in Chennai, Mr. Karunanidhi said that Mr. Maran's son was also paying for the cost of maintaining the family members who were taking care of the Minister. ``In this context, Kalanithi feels that he should also bear the total cost involved in the treatment of his father in the United States. Hence, he will pay/reimburse the Government of India, all expenditure incurred so far, apart from footing future expenditure,'' Mr. Karunanidhi said, in the letter dated June 18, a copy of which was released to the press.
