Cure for hyperthyroidism?

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI June 19. A new cure for hyperthyroidism could be in the offing, with scientists at the Indore-based Devi Ahilya University proving that leaves of custard apple could be used to regulate thyroid.

In a paper published in the latest edition of the scientific journal, Current Science, Sunanda Panda and Anand Kar of the Thyroid Research Laboratory in the University, have reported that tests conducted by them with mice have proved that extracts of the leaf regulated thyroid function.

The cure was, however, seen to be effective only in lower doses. With higher concentrations, there appeared to be a danger of adverse side effects on the liver.

Scientists had chosen the custard apple leaves as the plant was attributed with some medicinal properties such as anti-tumour, diuretic and anti-fertility activities in mice and rats. Hyperthyroidism or excess secretion of thyroid hormones is often considered a causative factor for some of the common health problems such as diabetes and heart ailments.
