`Rs. 90 cr. set aside for modernisation of bus stands'

By Our Correspondent

KOLAR JUNE 19. The Government has embarked on a project of modernising bus stands in the State, the Minister for Transport, B.Ramanath Rai, has said.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, Mr. Rai said that over Rs. 90 crore had been earmarked for the purpose.

A sum of Rs. 3 crore would be provided to Kolar District to take up modernisation of bus stations in Kolar and Chintamani.

The minister said the bus stand at KGF would be modernised at an estimated cost of Rs. 40 lakh. Tenders had already been invited for it, he said.

To provide better service to the people of the district, bus depots would be set up at Mulbagal and Gowribidanur, he said and added that KSRTC authorities would decide on increasing the number of schedules depending on the demand.

Mr. Rai said that the mini bus stand at Sidlaghatta would be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, on Friday. He said that district-level committees, which had been formed to raise traffic awareness among the public, had been provided Rs. 10 lakh each.

The minister appealed to the people to follow traffic rules which would help in cutting down the accident rate.

Referring to the fewer number of buses from Bangalore to Kolar in the evenings, Mr. Rai instructed the KSRTC authorities to ensure that all buses that plied through the bypass road touched Kolar.

He said steps would be taken to modernise the old bus stand near the taluk office on D.V.G. Road.

Pointing out that there were over 100 Rajahamsa buses, the minister said the KSRTC would soon induct 300 more buses to provide better service to people.

The revenue target set for the Transport Department the previous year was Rs. 666 crore, and the target was exceeded by Rs. 4 crore.

This year, the corporation has already earned a revenue of Rs. 118 crore, while the target set was Rs. 912 crore, he added.

Gayathri Devi, Regional Transport Officer, said that last year's target for Kolar District was Rs. 6 crore and the revenue earned was Rs. 6.1 crore. The target was Rs. 7.10 crore this year and the department had already earned Rs. 84 lakh, she said.

Last year, the department conducted seven `Sarige adalats' to solve the problems of the people and the response to them was good.

Some of the suggestions given at these adalats were taken note of and they were implemented, she added.
