Humpy to skip World junior tourney

HYDERABAD JUNE 19. India's youngest Grandmaster Koneru Humpy has decided to skip the World junior chess championship to be held in Azerbaijan from June 21.

Speaking to The Hindu, 16-year-old Humpy (ELO 2496) said that she would instead be taking part in the North Sea Cup closed Grandmasters tournament in Denmark from July 4 to 12 and later in the Political Cup in the same country from July 14 to 26.

Incidentally, India's best player after World Cup champion Viswanathan Anand, Krishnan Sasikiran, will be featuring in the July 4 meet along with Humpy to be the only Indians in the fray.

Humpy said that she was confident of putting up a better performance as she had been trying out various new openings of late with her father-cum-coach Koneru Ashok.
