Karnataka-Bangalore

The most disputed resolution that was passed at the meeting was the handing over of playgrounds to the KSLTA, which would use the playgrounds for training aspiring lawn tennis players. Cutting across party lines, the Janata Dal (Secular), Janata Dal (United) and the BJP members opposed the resolution on the ground that the Standing Committee on Education and Social Justice had rejected the proposal earlier. The resolution was reportedly passed on the direction from the Chief Minister, S.M.Krishna, who is also the President of the KSLTA. The corporators, who supported the resolution, said that students of the Mahanagara Palike-run schools should be given priority at the tennis coaching classes to be conducted on these playgrounds. Earlier, it was proposed to hand over 22 playgrounds to the KSLTA. But the number was reduced as some corporators belonging to the ruling party too opposed the move. The Council passed a resolution to give seven Mahanagara Palike schools in adoption to the Akshara Foundation. The Standing Committee on Education and Social Justice had earlier opposed the proposal. The meeting also resolved to hand over work to lay concrete roads in SKR Market to the Karnataka Land Army Limited as the contractors, Shamaraju and Company, "had failed to implement the works.'' A resolution recording the Government's decision to lease one acre of Mahanagara Palike land to Universal Resorts was also passed at the meeting. After the four resolutions were passed, the Mayor, C.M.Nagaraj, adjourned the Council for lunch. When the post-lunch session started, the Opposition members staged a dharna in the Council Hall and raised slogans against the Mayor and the Mahanagara Palike for passing the resolutions. The corporators belonging to Opposition parties said that the meeting was a special one convened to discuss the water problem in the City and thus the issue should be given priority. They demanded that the four resolutions be withdrawn and discussions held before passing them. The Mayor, however, said that the issues had been discussed in detail and asked them to withdraw the dharna. When the Opposition members did not relent, he adjourned the meeting. However, the Opposition members staged a dharna outside the meeting hall later. The Janata Dal (United) leader, Padmanabha Reddy, Janata Dal (Secular) leader, Zameel Ahmed, and the BJP leader, B.S.Sathyanarayana, spoke.
