Cyber porn victim's mother seeks action against police

By K.T. Sangameswaran

CHENNAI JUNe 18. The mother of an important witness in the `cyber porn crime case', in which the city doctor, Prakash, is involved, has sought action against police personnel who were responsible for her daughter attempting to commit suicide.

Chitra, an approver, was battling for life in a private hospital here, and a magistrate, who came there twice to record her statement, could not do so as she was unconscious, her mother, Maragatham of Aminjikkarai here, submitted in a petition to the State Human Rights Commission.

The rights forum Member, S. Sambandham, took cognisance of the complaint and ordered notice to the Chennai Police Commissioner to file his reply by June 30.

(The police filed the charge sheet in the `cyberporn crime case' in March last in which nine persons, including the doctor and his brother, were arraigned as accused. The prosecution case is that the doctor brought young girls to his farmhouse at Kalanjikuppam, near Ennore. He ordered them to undress themselves. Those who refused to obey were threatened with a revolver and forced to submit themselves. He took pictures even as the girls were forced to engage in sexual acts.)

Mrs. Maragatham submitted that Chitra had already given a statement to a magistrate under section 164 Cr.P.C. in connection with the case, supporting the police. Following this, her family suffered immense hardship. Based on a request, the police assured them that protection would be given to them, but the promise was not kept.

Though the doctor was in jail, Chitra suffered mental torture due to his influence which was being exerted with the support of some police personnel. The police threatened her daughter in the guise of searching for her son, Stalin, in connection with a case. Several persons, who identified themselves as police personnel, started troubling her. There was no relief even after they shifted home from one place to another.

Following this, Chitra along with Stalin's wife, Asha, consumed poison on June 15 and were hospitalised.

Already, Rs.78,000 had been spent for the treatment. The police also gave distorted versions to the press regarding the suicide attempt.
