The Karnataka Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, and the Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, B.K.Chandrashekar (next to Mr. Krishna), at the inauguration of the office of the Karnataka Tirupati and Tirumala Trust in Bangalore on Wednesday.
In a sharp reaction to the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, seeking a CWC review of the Krishna Basin projects in the State, Mr. Krishna said the CWC should first inspect the Telugu Ganga Project for the gross violations of the original agreement. The project was envisaged to provide 15 tmcft of water to Chennai. But Andhra Pradesh had violated the agreement and built irrigation canals, he said. Mr. Krishna was talking to presspersons at the Karnataka Media Academy (formerly Karnataka Press Academy) at the Visvesvaraya Tower after inaugurating the office of the Karnataka Tirupati and Tirumala Trust at the Podium Block.
Paragodu project
On the Paragodu project in Kolar district, Mr. Krishna said the Government had sent memorandum to the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, after Andhra Pradesh raised objections to the construction of a dam across the Chitravati for providing drinking water to Bagepalli and Gudibanda taluks. He said the memorandum listed the problems faced by the people of the district due to contamination of water in the wells.
Admission to professional colleges
Referring to the standoff between the Government and the managements of professional colleges over admissions, Mr. Krishna said admissions to professional colleges would be only through the Common Entrance Test (CET). He declined to comment on the plan to go in for parallel admissions by the managements of some colleges. He said all colleges should make admissions only through the CET route.
