India, U.S. discuss military operations in Iraq

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI June 18. India today continued its high-level discussion with the United States on the prospects of sending troops to Iraq.

The question of India joining the military operations in Iraq came up during a 40-minute meeting today between the External Affairs Minister, Yashwant Sinha, and the U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell.

The two leaders were meeting in Phnom Penh on the margins of the regional forum of the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

India is simultaneously engaged in technical discussions with the United States on the terms of sending a stabilisation force to Iraq and working out a national consensus on the issue.

Mr. Powell and Mr. Sinha also touched upon the current situation in the subcontinent, in particular Indo-Pakistan relations. The two leaders also reviewed the progress in Indo-U.S. relations since they last met in Moscow last month.

Mr. Sinha also had a separate meeting with the Foreign Minister of Cambodia, Hor Namhung. Mr. Sinha presented an indelible ink to be used in the coming elections in Cambodia.
