Miners' bodies recovered

By Our Staff Reporter

GODAVARIKHANI JUNE 18. The bodies of 17 coal workers who died when water gushed into the 7 LEP (life extension project) underground mine of the Singareni Collieries Company limited of Ramagundam division in Godavarikhani on Monday, were retrieved on Wednesday.

The retrieval of the bodies -- badly decomposed -- started from the early hours of Wednesday and by afternoon all the bodies were fished out. As the bodies were lifted above the underground mine, the waiting family members and relatives broke into sobs.

A team of eight doctors conducted post-morterm and the inquest on the bodies on the spot and handed over the bodies to the families. The SCCL management assisted the families in the conduct of the last rites. A pall of gloom descended on Godavarikhani town.

The SCCL rescue team was pressed into service on Monday by deploying two pumping machines of 40 HP capacity. Again on Tuesday two more pumps of 125 HP and 90 HP motors were installed to pump out about 8 lakh gallons of water from the mine.
