Girls grab six top medical ranks

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI JUNE 18. The Directorate of Medical Education today released merit lists for medical and dental courses for 2003-04 and announced that the first phase of counselling under the single window system would begin on June 26.

The list for paramedical courses is expected in the next few days.

While six of the top 10 rankers are girls, the first ranker is R.Balaji (1533547) of the DAV Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Gopalapuram, Chennai. He has scored 299.75 marks.

The list revealed an intense competition this year, with the second to seventh rankerholders scoring the same mark: 299.58.

The Director of Medical Education, P.Vijayalakshmi, said the ranks were based on a criterion, which graded students with equal scores: entrance marks and marks in Biology, Physics and Chemistry totalled together, and finally, the date of birth for seniority.

The directorate received 12, 814 applications of which 12, 564 were eligible. Of these, 7,151 were girls.

The DME said the schedule for counselling would soon be notified in the media and call letters would be sent as per ranks. Students who did not receive call letters and those who received revalued or retotalled marks could also attend counselling as per schedule, she said.

The director added that counselling sessions would be held again later to incorporate revisions or increase seats as per Medical Council of India guidelines and approval. The MCI allowed admissions till September 30, she said.

Last year, the directorate held counselling for about 1,100 MBBS seats in 11 government colleges. However, the number of seats was expected to increase this year, as the Supreme Court ruled in favour of starting the Meenakshi Ammal Medical College in Kancheepuram. The Government also announced that it would add 350 seats in government colleges from 2003-04. Certain revisions were expected in the number of medical seats as per recent MCI guidelines.

The second to tenth rankholders are: 299.58 marks - (6932429) M.Nithya of Villuppuram, (9532055) U.Sridhurga of Sattur, (7122327) V.Amutha of Madurai, (6532883) R.Saranya of Attur, (7131700) N.Sabarish of Madurai, (4731425) G.Vinod of Kavettipatti; 299.33 marks - (4131139) N.Sudhan of Rasipuram, (4732035) B.Saranya Devi of Rasipuram, (7732105) M.Karthiyayini of Sivagangai.
